Two men have died after the 700 tonne floating crane, the PK-700 Grigoriy Prosyankin overturned in the port of Sevastopol in Crimea yesterday.
20 other people on board at the time were injured, seven of whom remain in hospital. The Grigoriy Prosyankin, was launched in 2020 and was intended for maintenance work on naval ships and submarines, but was never completed or went into service. It was, we understand, undergoing lift tests at the time. One theory is that the ballast stabilising system malfunctioned causing the barge to flip over.
Russia’s Investigative Committee for Crimea and Sevastopol has opened a criminal case relating to safety violations in maritime transport.
