A man died yesterday when a hoist tower/mast climber collapsed on a residential site in central Dublin, Ireland. Inital reports and visuals suggested that it was a hoist as reported by the police and safety authorities. We are now fairly certain though that it was a mast climber.
The incident occurred at what was the old Glass Bottle plant in Ringsend, on the south side of the River Liffey opposite the docks. According to the police, the man, said to be in his 40s, was on the platform when it came down and landed on a balcony. He was declared dead at the scene. The platform is branded as Builders Hoists Ltd.
The site is being developed into several medium rise apartment buildings, the first phase being developed by the Pembroke Beach consortium, includes 564 homes along with retail and mixed-use space.. The main contractor on Phase one is Sisk, which issued the following statement: “We are aware of an incident on our Glass Bottle site in Dublin. We are currently investigating the circumstances and will update once we have further information.”
The Health and Safety Authority – HSA – confirmed that it launched an immediate investigation and attended the scene along with the police and emergency services.
We will update this item when we learn more
