UK lifting and rigging equipment supplier Rope and Sling Specialists - RSS - will now offer The Buddie System crane safety technology, an emergency back up communication device designed for crane operators and those working below the hook.
The wireless instant safety device allows dogmen/riggers/slinger-signallers, to instantly alert crane operators to stop operations if issues arise, such as equipment failure, loss of radio signal, or when a worker becomes caught in machinery, addressing miscommunication problems with traditional two way radio systems. Unlike camera systems, the device does not require the operator to be watching a screen to receive an alert.
The Buddie System kit
A single crane device can be paired with up to 10 lanyards, operates over distances of more than 1,000 metres, and multiple systems can be used on the same site.
Steve Hutin RSS managing director, said: "The product was conceptualised following an incident where interference blocked radio communication between a rigger and a crane operator - and the former is lucky to have escaped serious injury or death. UK riggers commonly wear lanyards fitted with whistles and other safety devices, but in most instances, the crane driver is too far away to hear or see the issues before it's too late. This concept maintains a constant link to the cab. We have seen many product demonstrations, and it's great how user friendly it is; pairing and set up is simple."
