Tower crane jib collapses

The jib of a luffing tower crane buckled and collapsed on a site in Forest Hill, London, yesterday morning. The crane – thought to be a Raimondi LR60 – was working at the time of the accident.

Following an inspection, it was agreed that the main tower of the crane was stable, and there was no need to evacuate the site or to immediately dismantle the crane. Fortunately no-one was injured although the jib reportedly knocked over some concrete columns on site and may have damaged a car.

A closer picture reveals the damage


The site managed by Deco Design & Build is situated in Bird in the Hand Passage. Two possible causes of the accident that will be investigated include metal fatigue and high winds - although wind in the area at the time was thought to be 8 knots.
