Spierings launches Crawler crane

Spierings the Dutch based manufacturer of mobile self erecting tower cranes held an open day in late June to launch its new SK2400-R crawler mounted crane, while also formally opening its new production halls which came into operation earlier in the year.

The new SK2400R takes the Spierings range up to six models, five mounted on All Terrain chassis and the new unit on tracks. .

Local building contractor Hendriks encouraged Spierings Cranes to start the development of a crawler-crane and placed the first orders. Owner Lambèr Hendriks was looking for a crane that was easy to transport, and yet mobile on site with a compact footprint.

The undercarriage on the new crane

The SK2400-R is a much lighter machine in comparison to traditional lattice boomed crawler-cranes that offer similar long reach lift capacities. It is also much quicker and easier to erect on site. Its maximum lift capacity is 18 tonnes at 14.6 metres radius, while the maximum lifting height is up to 56 metres while the nominal capacity is not high, the crane can still lift 5.5 tonnes at a distance of 42 metres. With a load moment of up to 263 ton/metres the crane can lift with many 300 tonne telescopic cranes at great height and radius.

The new crane loads its counterweight onto a trailer

The new crane can lift its own tracks and counterweight onto a regular trailer. Afterwards, the crane will dismantle itself and then load itself onto a semi low-loading trailer. This method of dismantling enables transportation with only two trucks which can be ready to move within 75 minutes of the completion of a job.

The entire crane can be transported on two trucks

.At the open day the 2400-R teamed up with its sister crane, the seven axle SK2400-AT7 to perform a tandem lift. The two cranes lifted an SK377-AT3 weighing 36 tonnes.

Interestingly the outline design for the 2400 crane was originally drawn up as crawler crane by Spierings in 2001, but at the time the concept did not generate any orders and was shelved. In 2006 he crane designs were dusted off and completed for mounting on a seven axle carrier for Dutch rental company Verschoor, the resulting crane has proved a major success with a large number of rental companies.

When Hendricks placed an order for eight new Spierings crawlers lat year, the company realised that the crawler models time had finally come.

The new production halls have a surface area of 8.700 square metres, taking the overall size of the facility up to 28.000 square metres..
