MEC reveals Titan Boom

MEC has unveiled photographs of its new 40ft big-platform boom lift, dubbed the Titan Boom 40-S. The unit will be demonstrated in Orlando next week as it sets off on a three month travelling road show.

The company says that the new boom combines the strengths of three machines into one adding the capacity of a telehandler at 1,800 kg, to the work area of a large heavy duty scissor lift at 6.7 x 2.28 metres, and the reach and the rotation and outreach of a boom lift.

The platform is supported centrally and rotates 180 degrees.

The unusual machine combines a scissor type chassis and platform with a three section telescopic boom plus a heavy jib that runs under the platform. It has some similarities to Manitou’s 15TP but is completely different and MEC has been careful to register a number of patents for it prior to showing it publicly.

The 40ft/12.2 metre platform height unit is powered by a Kubota diesel with four wheel drive, four wheel steer and automatic platform leveling. The platform rotates a full 180 degrees and is approved for up to four people plus over 1,350 kgs of material.

The MEC Titan 40-S offers up to 46ft/14.2 metres of working height

The machine weighs 10,900 kgs and can drive while elevated up to 9.1 metres platform height. Forward outreach is eight metres although the unit can cover up to 16.7 metres horizontally at a height of up to 6.7 metres.

The lift has an overall width of 2.44 metres, although this can be reduced to 2.2 metres for shipping. Overall length is 6.7 metres – the same length as the platform.

It is intended for jobs such as block laying where a big capacity is required and where it might also be difficult to get the machine’s chassis up close to the work. Applications might include glazing, pipe fitting, structural steel, sprinklers, masonry and cladding.


Vertikal Comment

This is an exciting new concept which should prove popular for heavy duty applications. MEC said that it would be concentrating its efforts on specialist niche machines and this product certainly fits the bill.

The concept was shown to a number of dealers last year and we understand that the company has already sold out most, if not all of the first year’s production. We also understand that the concept can be extended to 60ft/20 metres if sufficient demand exists.

It is excellent to see something so radical at a time when most manufacturers appear to have slowed new product launches to a snails pace. The lift should give the California based company a real boost, in a quiet market.
