Pippa Middleton discovers AWPs

Pippa Middleton, sister of Kate – now the duchess of Cambridge, wife of prince William – has written a column about her experience in an aerial lift.

Writing in the Telegraph newspaper she explains how she had never heard of a cherry picker before and how impressed she was to operate it as she helped a team install Christmas lights on a larger department store in London. Working around 10 metres up in a truck mounted lift rented in from Facelift, she describes the experience as 'exhilarating'.

Yet another story involving a mewp where the mewp guy thinks he knows everything. I don't know how we all managed to go things before mewps existed oh that's right we used cranes. Also just because you adhere to chapter 8 and have a permit powlo this alone does not make the operation safe.
And clearly this is not the best job to use to portray pippa Middleton in a mewp. The last time I looked more mewps go over than cranes so maybe your not as perfect as you all think.

Guys !

Pippa may not really be operating the AWP, yes she has her hand on the joystick - but that's not proof of operation is it ?

And yes.. here comes the double entendre.. she can put her hand on my joysti.... Oh you could see that one coming a mile off !

I would agree with powlo on this one. Lets just put things into context. Yes Pippa does appear to be operating the machine. But the machine operator was in control of the deadman petal and the basket was away from any obstacles, so machine being used for lighting persons as per manufacturers intention. On the other hand the "stunt" of giving people rides on a crane hook was undertaken by a trained operator at the controls. So Machine being used correctly, no.

Powlo I forgot an unqualified and incompetent operator can operate a crane or mewp as long as there is a qualified operator near by. Next time someone wants to have a go in my crane I will just jump out the cab and let them jump straight in and have a go

its worth a try trying to find anything wrong with whats going on here but there isn't as you can see it has more than the average chapter 8 set-out and would'nt be suprised if a seperate t.m company is doing the chapter 8 and diverting pedestrians over the otherside of the road and would imagine they have all the permits in-place to work on the road, but no he does'nt need the outriggers extended on the off-side as this is not a crane ! and if pippa did operate it so what there's a trained operator in the cage with her with an appropiate i.p.a.f card so can't see any wrong in that as for the men below the platform there in no direct danger as the cage is situated under the work they are doing and they are at least wearing hard-hats stick to what you know which is obviously the crane industry....

I have just read this article and am totally bemused, this operation is being carried out by the company run by the same person who criticised my company for lifting someone in a man basket on a crane, which was later proved to be perfectly legal, this operation is being carried out on a live carriageway with cones around the platform, this is illegal(people can walk through cones) and should be done with linked pedestrian barriers and signage as per chapter 8 of the RTA,also the outrigger on the opposite side is not extended,I am not a lifting platform expert but should this not be extended? It also appears from the pictures that there is somebody working directly beneath the platform
Also I note from the comments that Pippa operated the platform herself, which obviously begs the question has she got an IPAF licence ?
You publicly criticised people in our industry who lift members of the public in crane man baskets for stunts, for which I do agree with your criticism, but is this not the same scenario ?
