New lithium ion batteries from Trojan

US based battery manufacturer Trojan has launched the new Trillium range of ‘intelligent’ lithium ion batteries for deep cycle applications.

Available in three different sizes, the Trillium range has a life expectancy of over 5,000 cycles, and employs the industry standard 26650 size Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) cells in the highest capacity cell configuration, which according to the company provides market leading cycle life and energy density, while making them easy to install on a retrofit basis for lead acid batteries. The new Trillium batteries are also IP67 rated for protection against dust and humidity and allowing them to be used in demanding environments. The ‘intelligent’ electronic controls provide integral battery protection and voltage compatibility for all 12, 24, 36 and 48 volt applications, including the ability to use most existing lead acid chargers. Other features include CAN-bus communication, built in diagnostics and an integrated state of charge indicator.

Director of global product solutions Ivan Menjak said: “It was important for us to incorporate intelligent solutions including advanced cell technology, sophisticated electronics and easy integration providing our customers with lower initial cost of energy as well as decreased total cost of ownership over the life of the battery.”

Executive vice president of marketing and product management Bryan Godber added: “Trojan’s entry into the lithium ion space demonstrates our commitment to offering energy storage solutions for our customers in deep cycle industrial segments and allows for expansion into exciting new markets.”

Chief executive Neil Thomas said: “This is another significant milestone towards our strategic mission of offering a complete range of deep cycle energy storage technologies and solutions for our customers. The addition of a highly competitive lithium product line further strengthens our best in class technology portfolio.”

This is great news. Now, all Trojan needs to do is actually sell something. In recent months, I made 6 different phone calls to 6 different representatives or employees of Trojan. They were all fired up on the initial contact but not a single one of them ever returned the call. So I did business with Exide/GNB.

Why use phrases like "easy to install on a retro fit basis for lead acid" what do you replace the weight with??

Only going to work on applications where lead acid batteries do not form part of the mass required for stability.

Excellent to see that battery technology is coming to mainstream powered access, all we require now is the manufacturers to develop anti theft protection for batteries as it costs hire and customers a fortune in replacements.
