220 tonne Liebherr for Orkney
Heddle Construction of the Orkney Islands in the far north of Scotland has taken delivery of a 220 tonne Liebherr LTM 1220-5.2 All Terrain crane.
The new crane is now the largest mobile crane available for rent on the island and joins an exclusively Liebherr fleet.
Family-owned Heddle, which celebrates its 40th anniversary next year, has been a Liebherr crane customer for more than 20 years and provides a wide variety of construction, civil engineering, agricultural and materials handling services and is the only crane hire company on Orkney.
The company says that a growing demand for higher, longer reach and heavier lifting capabilities has prompted the investment. The LTM 1220-5.2 is equipped with a 60 metres main boom plus a 12.20 to 22 metre swing-away extension with 0, 22.5 and 45 degree off-sets.

Director Derek Heddle said: “We are very much planning for the future in buying this crane and it has already been proving its worth in precision lifts at both height and radius. We’ve been running 40 and 60 tonne Liebherr mobiles in our fleet for many years and this new acquisition is very much our flagship, adding an extra dimension to our capabilities.”
Well Done Derek, delighted for you, and wish you all the best with your new crane.
HOWEVER - get a set of steel pans (at least 2.4m x 2.4m) under your outriggers, regardless of what you are setting up on - don't be fooled by concrete, or by quay operator pointing out the 'stucturally safe' ring beams that are in 'perfect position' for your outriggers ! You might get away with this using a 55, but certainly not a crane of this size....
