The new crane has already gone to work, with one of the first jobs being the refurbishment of an offshore drilling platform at the Remontowa Shipyard in Gdańsk.
The GTK1100 was used to place several sophisticated components within the WilPhoenix offshore drilling rig during a substantial upgrade taking place at the shipyard.
The crane carried out the lift from the limited space within the dry dock. Viatron partially rigged the GTK1100 with its outriggers and telescopic mast, before lifting it in this partially-assembled configuration into the dry dock using one of the shipyard’s 1,000 tonne gantry cranes.

The whole process was completed in just 12 hours, the GTK1100 lifted various components including control equipment modules and the drill control mechanism, weighting up to 10 tonnes, to heights of 116 metres, working at a radius of up to 52 metres.

WilPhoenix is one of two semi-submersible vessels belonging to Awilco Drilling and is equipped for drilling in water at depths of over 360 metres.
Igor Pawela chief executive of Viatron said: “The GTK1100 is one of the most innovative cranes I’ve seen in years. We studied this crane for several months in a wide range of industries and applications. Our customers are in energy and industrial markets and need innovative solutions for their refurbishment and new-build projects. The GTK1100 is an ideal solution.”
