Spiders in The Hobbit

A number of spider lifts are being used on the set of film 'The Hobbit' in New Zealand. The set of Peter Jackson’s two part fantasy film The Hobbit is starting to take shape now, in Glenorchy on the northern tip of Lake Wakatipu, New Zealand, the same setting as for the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

In total three spider lifts are being used to attend to the finer details on the three storey set, including the construction of a fake tree (see picture) and also working on thatched roofs. All work should be completed in time for filming, which is due to begin later this month.

Part one of The Hobbit - An Unexpected Journey - is expected to be released in cinemas for next December.
