First new Liebherr for Specialist

UK based Specialist Crane Hire, has taken delivery of the first new Liebherr crane that it has ever bought, a 40 tonnes LTM 1040-2.1 All Terrain.

The new Liebherr joins a fleet of around 35 cranes, operating from Specialist’s four depots. The two axle LTM 1040-2.1 is equipped with a four section 35 metre main boom, offering 7.4 tonnes capacity when fully extended and 1.1 tonnes at its 31 metres maximum radius. The crane has also been ordered with a 9.5 metre swingaway extension, that offsets by 0, 20, 40 or 60 degrees.

The new crane includes the latest GSM module technology, providing a direct on-board link between the customer and Liebherr’s after-sales engineers, both in the UK and the company’s Ehingen plant, to assist in diagnostics and fault-finding should the need arise.

The official hand over

Initially concentrating on nuclear power station work, Specialist Crane Hire has expanded the fleet to allow it to move into the general crane rental market, although long term power generation contracts remain its core business.

While the new crane is the first new Liebherr for the company, it acquired an 18 year old 35 tonner with one of its acquisitions. Specialist’s managing director John Chappell said: "It was our experience with the old crane that convinced us to purchase the new one. The 35 tonner is still performing extremely well, is a thoroughly productive machine, hasn’t given us any trouble whatsoever and the operator loves it! The obvious reliability was a significant factor for us in making our buying decision for a new 40 tonner".
