Moog for Romanian highway

German under-bridge inspection platform specialist Moog has delivered a customised MBI 180 for the Bucharest to Constanta A2 highway.

The trailer mounted unit was ordered by the Joint Venture between Max Bögl and Astaldi which won the contract for the bridges on the Medgidia to Constanta sector.

The biggest challenge for Moog was to design a machine that could cope with the challenges of bridge number 20, over the Danube to Black Sea canal. It required a vertical drop of more than 12 metres to clear the lowest part of the arch, where it joins the bridge support legs. At the same point the platform had to provide 11 metres working height at the end of the 18 metre platform, in order to inspect the areas behind the main beams.

The solution involved modifying a Moog MBI 180 trailer mounted unit, on which a tower extension was installed to provide a reach of 13 metres below deck, with an 18 metre long by 1.7 metre wide platform with an 800kg capacity. This allowed the installation of a hydraulically powered platform on the end that can extend up to nine metres providing the operators with the 11 metres working height they needed on the end of the platform.

As the unit was ordered to serve as both an inspection and a repair platform Moog installed a hydraulic crane on the trailer that can lift material or tools down to the platform instead of manipulating them down through the access tower.

The trailer is equipped with a diesel generator that delivers power for the hydraulic system, as well as the power supply for the electrical sockets on the platform. For emergency situations a petrol engine and a second hydraulic pump are installed.

The five axle running gear uses standard truck axles, while a single counterweight serves for all possible working configurations. The hydraulic creep speed travel and steer function enables the machine to move during operation, which takes up a single lane.
