Two new Manitowoc Dongyue cranes
Manitowoc has launched two new Dongyue truck crane models at an open day at its facility in China.
The new cranes, the eight tonne GT8 and 10 tonne GT10A are designed specifically for the local market and benefit from improved design and production processes now implemented at the plant in TaiAn, Shangdong Province, including the company’s 5S process based around the principles of Sorting, Straightening, Shining, Standardising and Sustaining. Adopting the new manufacturing process has involved a complete redesign of the shop floor and several important additions, including a new paint line.

The Chinese based design team has also moved to Solidworks CAD software, finite element analysis and Design For Manufacture and Assembly methodology.
Robin Zhang, production manager at Manitowoc Dongyue Heavy Machinery said: “Our previous eight tonne truck crane, the QY8, had approximately 10 percent more tail-swing than its competitors. But using DFMA and other design tools the GT8 has 20 percent less tail-swing than any other crane in the class.”
The GT8 has a 17.4 metre, three section full power main boom, plus a simple six metre swingaway extension for an overall lifting height of 23.9 metres. With this maximum combination, the crane can lift 1.3 tonnes to five metre radius.

The GT10A has a 19.9 metre three section full power main boom, which fully extends in 40 seconds. The same swingaway as the GT8 takes the total boom/extension length to 25.8 m metres.
The two cranes have been designed with simplicity as their key feature, with manual hydraulic controls. However the new cab has been significantly improved to provide more comfort and better visibility. Top road speed is 74kph.
