Bigge 125D up and running

Bigge’s first 4,000 tonne AFRD 125D heavy lift crane has been erected at the Vogtle nuclear power plant Burke County, near Waynesboro, Georgia.

The massive crane, which uses a 5,000 tonne in ground concrete counterweight will play a major part in construction of the Vogtle 3 and 4 generating plants.

The boom sections are massive

Shaw Group is building the plants - which use an advanced Westinghouse pressurised water reactor, powering a General Electric turbine and electric generator - for Southern Company

The 80 metre long counterweight tie rod/Derrick boom anchor

The crane, rigged with 170 metres of main boom and 63 metre fixed jib can lift 3,740 tonnes at 73 metres, 760 tonnes to 195 metres and 455 tonnes to 241 metres! Most lifts for this project will be in the range of a 1,000 tonnes at long radii.
