Kalmar RT ships first non-military handlers

Kalmar RT has shipped its first ever civilian Rough Terrain reach stackers to Western Australia.

The Toll Group, one of Asia’s leading logistics companies, purchased the four Kalmar RT240s for the Gorgon Project, a joint venture led by Chevron Australia to develop the greater Gorgon gas fields off the coast of Western Australia, the country’s largest-known gas resource. The RT240 is intended to add capacity and efficiency to the freight and materials handling operations in this remote location.

Initially produced for the United States Armed Forces, the Kalmar RT240 Rough Terrain Reach Stacker is capable of handling 20 foot and 40 foot ISO containers on a wide variety of ground conditions. It is able to stack containers weighing 24 tonnes three high in the first row and those weighing up to 12.5 tonnes three high in the second row. It can do all of this while coping with grades of up to 27 percent and water up to a metre deep. Its versatility is extended with the availability of fork and sling lift attachments.

The units are built by Kalmar RT, of Cibolo, Texas, part of the Kalmar/Terminals division of Cargotec.

Kalmar RT Center’s chief executive Bryan Stephens said: "The Kalmar equipment with its attachments - whether it's a sling load or a fork lift attachment - has the ability to perform the functions of four of five pieces of equipment on a drill site. And is faster, more efficient and safer."

Randy Wingenroth, Kalmar RT vice president of product and business development added: "The RT240, the Rough Terrain Reach Stacker, has revolutionised logistics operations worldwide for the U.S. Military and its allies, and now we're offering this product commercially for the first time. Kalmar rough terrain machines move safely, efficiently, and effectively in virtually any terrain. The possibilities for commercial applications are endless."

It has side-shift forks and operates in up to a metre of water and can climb grades of up to a 45 percent.
