A lightweight BMU

Norwegian suspended platform and monorail track system manufacturer Koltek has introduced the Koltek RC-402 roofcar – a new lightweight Building Maintenance Unit (BMU).

The Koltek roofcar is a lightweight system for a single suspended platform. It has been designed for the inspection and maintenance of building exteriors, bridges, ships and offshore installations. The system runs on a custom-built aluminium track and has a two-track extending jib which allows the machine to easily move round corners and smaller obstacles.

The roofcar only weighs 110kg as the winch for the hoisting and steel ropes are incorporated into the suspended platform. Basket capacity varies depending on the length of the jib, type of rail and the position of front rail. It is either controlled from the platform or from up on the roof.

The company claim that it is up to 50 percent less expensive than most BMUs and that it is significantly lighter as a standard BMU can weigh over five tonnes.

Stuart Martin, commercial manager for Koltek’s UK distributor Alternative Access Logistics, said: “We have found that the standard BMU causes customers many structural, logistical and financial problems. The impact of a BMU is often felt the most on the building structure itself as a medium sized unit can weigh as much as five tonnes – and that is not including the weight of the steel tracks. The Koltek RC-402 system, with its aluminium tracks, is a fraction of the weight which in turn reduces the weight and impact on the building.”
