More Kings for AFI

The UK’s second largest powered access group AFI Uplift confirmed an order for 11 more access delivery trailers from King Highway at Vertikal Days this week.

AFI group director, Nick Higgins visited the show to see the company’s new King access platform delivery trailer which was demonstrated on the IPAF stand just next door to King’s stand. He confirmed that the AFI management team had authorised the purchase of 11 additional trailers if the ‘first off’ met his satisfaction.

The King prototype trailer for AFI is confirmed at Vertikal Days

The AFI trailer is based on King’s ‘Access Package GTS44’ which is now in service in a number of powered access rental fleets. The company said: “the AFI prototype incorporates a number of changes which have been requested to ensure that the units can cope with different situations, machine types etc, as AFI expands and develops.”

“The GTS44 is the most popular step frame low loader manufactured in the UK, we have committed considerable engineering resources to tailor a variation of this trailer to suit the needs of the access industry. Many loading trials of platforms have taken place to optimise the frame profile to deal with the particular needs of access users which demand shallow loading angles and minimum ‘hump heights’ to accommodate low ground clearance machines.”

“A two stage neck was developed to give an optimum slope and avoid the need to incorporate expensive and maintenance dependant lifting decks. Particular attention was also placed on ensuring that the optimum, fully rated shackle layout on the trailer enables machines both big and small to be carried in the best possible way.”

“Double fold forward ramps were developed to reduce wind drag, maximise fuel efficiency and reduce emissions. Tests carried out by AFI have shown considerable improvements in these areas with this type of ramp configuration. In addition the trailer features a raft of operator safety features including:-
• Swing down and slide rear lights for greater visibility whilst approaching vehicles when ramps are lowered
• Swing out outriggers and side fall restraint system with walkways to protect demounting operators
• Access ladders to deck
• Illuminated edge shackle positions which identify shackles in poor light conditions and also provide ‘runway lighting’ for ease of loading.
