Two new Sennebogen for ASCO

Scottish based international oilfield support services company ASCO has taken delivery of two new Sennebogen 6130HMC mobile harbour cranes at its largest logistics base for offshore supply.

Between 47 and 55 offshore vessels a week are loaded and unloaded at the Peterhead supply base with the ships supplying oil and gas extraction platforms with everything required from food products to drilling and construction materials. The two cranes are run by seven operators working in 12-hour shifts around the clock, with an operator regularly making 300 lifts weighing up to 60 tonnes each shift. The cab elevates up to 11 metres, helping safely position the loads onto the deck of the ship.

The company already had experience of the 6130 in Norway and sourced them for their flexibility - the cranes will typically relocate between docks at the large facility around 10 times a day. Operations manager, Duncan Bell, explains: "Previously the ships had to dock at specific berths depending on the material loaded, and it was not unusual for the ship to be transferred several times, today we move the cranes from one quay to the other in minutes. This is an immense saving in time and energy."

The cranes were delivered last year by UK distributor EH Hassell. ASCO opened the Peterhead logistics base - its first - in 1973 and now operates in 13 countries moving 1.7 million tonnes of goods a year to supply offshore platforms around the world.
