Unintended luffing
A reader has sent us an interesting looking photograph this week from somewhere in the oil patch it seems that the two Rough Terrain cranes working in tandem lowering an oil drilling platform when the weight appears to have been too much for them.

This clearly turned out to be heavier than expected!
It is unusual for both booms to bend like this and then stop and continue to support the load. There may be good reason for this which we cannot see – we did wonder at first if a little ‘photo-shop’ work might have been done, but it seems not. It looks as though no one was hurt in the incident.

Looks like a shock load to me, both cranes are reeved up for a heavy lift they look to be in the 70 - 100 ton capacity and although that tower looks chunky they only have half of it.

Without doubt that looks like it actually happened. The angle of the rope falls compared to where the heads were before they failed in tandom! That is absolutely incredible & incredible the load is still suspended!
