Crane fire closes motorway

Last night a five axle All Terrain crane caught fire near Junction 21 on the M62 in north west England.

The fire occurred at around 20:30, when witnesses claim that there was an explosion. Both sides of the motorway were closed, while the emergency services fought the blaze.

The explosions from the fire could be heard for miles

The crane driver is believed to have escaped unhurt, and the fire was officially extinguished sometime after midnight. The east bound side of the road remained closed until the early hours, while it was checked for diesel and oil spillage damage as well as the effects of the extreme heat. The crane remains on the hard shoulder.

The fire is finally extinguished

Greater Manchester Fire Service said: “At 8:36pm on September 24th, four fire engines from Heywood, Rochdale and Chadderton were mobilised to a fire involving a mobile crane on the M62 westbound carriageway between Junction 21 Milnrow and Junction 20 Rochdale. The vehicle was well alight on arrival of crew and the heat had caused the vehicle's tyres to explode which could be heard across parts of Rochdale and Oldham.”
