Crawler crane fatality

A lattice boom crawler crane overturned early this morning in Hyderbad, India, killing the operator.

The crane, a small to mid range Kobelco owned by MVR Constructions was lifting a concrete beam for a new flyover bridge when – we are told - one of the crane’s tracks sank into the asphalt road surface causing it to lose stability. However it is also entirely possible that an overload situation caused the crane to overturn and that the failure of the road surface was caused by the shift of weight onto the front of the tracks?

According to police reports the crane operator, Gurpreet Singh, 45, climbed out of the cab as the crane began to go over and sustained fatal injuries in the process, police have now added that he was sustained crush injuries, either from one of the carbody counterweights or the beam itself. He was declared dead at the scene.

Cranes have been brought in for the recovery but the whole process has looked decidedly unsafe so far.

At my training, admitedly long ago, I was told that it is statistically safer to remain in the cab when things go south, even if it was for a tower crane disaster scenarios. Such accidents always make me think of it...
