Self-erector overturn

A self-erecting tower crane overturned last week on a building site in Erkrath, near Düsseldorf, Germany.

The two axle towable Liebherr tower crane was being used for material handling work on the site of a new home being built in the Neandertal valley, when it overturned on last Wednesday morning with the jib and mast coming to rest on the roof of the building and the scaffolding.

It is thought the incident was caused by the ground giving way

Four of the building crew were injured in the incident, with one of them - who was working on the scaffold at the time - requiring emergency medical care. All four were admitted to a local hospital.

The incident injured four workers

The cause of the overturn was due to the ground giving way beneath one of the crane’s outriggers, possibly due to the persistent heavy rain in the area softening the ground.
