First Liebherr LPS 420 for US
North Carolina Port has taken delivery of the first Liebherr LPS 420 rail mounted gantry harbour crane in the US.
Based at the company’s Port of Morehead City terminal, the LPS 420 has a maximum capacity of 124 tonnes and a maximum radius of 48 metres. Mounted on specially designed curved running gear, the cranes is able to make 90 degree turns around the company’s rectangular terminal. It will mainly be used for handling grain and fertiliser as well as various project cargoes such as wind turbine, train and rail components.
Paul Cozza, North Carolina Ports director, said: “The addition of the new LPS 420 rail mounted gantry crane at the Port of Morehead City represents North Carolina Ports’ commitment to investing in the future and long-term success of the port, its customers and the North Carolina economy. The new crane will enable us to more efficiently handle a diverse range of cargoes and ultimately better meet customer demand.”

North Carolina Port runs ports in Wilmington and Morehead City, with the Port of Morehead City one of the deepest breakbulk and bulk facilities on the east coast of the US.
