Another UK first for Southern Cranes

UK rental company Southern Cranes & Access has taken delivery of the first five axle 250 tonne Grove GMK5250XL-1 All Terrain crane in the UK – the second UK first for the company this year following the delivery of Europe’s first Kato CR-250Rv city type All Terrain crane in January.

Launched at bauma last year, the GMK 5250XL ‘extra long’ is an updated version of the GMK5250L with an eight section 78.5 metres main boom - 8.5 metres more the regular L model - topped by an 18 metre bi-fold swingaway extension that can be extended with additional inserts to 34 metres. Features include the company’s MAXbase variable outrigger setup, Megatrak suspension with all wheel steering and Twin lock boom pinning system. The new GMK5250XL-1 was sent straight out on a job, dismantling a Potain MCT88 tower crane in Bristol.

Kelvin Prince, Southern Cranes & Access director, said: “We already own two GMK5250L models, which have been very popular for erecting and dismantling tower cranes, so as soon as the GMK5250XL-1 was announced, it was a no-brainer for us to add it to our fleet. That 8.5 metre of extra boom makes a big difference to the range of jobs it can complete. I can see this being a very busy crane.”
