Hybrid Kalmars for Hutchinson

Hong Kong based port operator Hutchison Ports has ordered the first 10 hybrid Kalmar straddle carriers in the Netherlands, for its Delta terminal in Rotterdam.

Scheduled for delivery later this year, the hybrid straddle carriers offer lifting capacities of 40, 50 and 60 tonnes, and can stack up to four containers high. The hybrid system uses a diesel powered generator to recharge its lithium-ion powered drive train, while regenerative braking and load lowering also provides a charge to the battery pack. Fuel consumption is said to be up to 40 percent lower than the equivalent diesel models.

Mikko Mononen, Kalmar vice president sales of Europe, Middle East, India & Africa, said: “It is a great honour to welcome ECT as a Kalmar customer and deliver our first hybrid straddle carriers in the Netherlands. This order further demonstrates the confidence that the market has in our proven hybrid technology and reflects the commitment from operators to work towards a more sustainable future for cargo handling.”
