Flag takes jib down

The jib of a self-erecting mobile tower crane came down in the town of Emmeloord, the Netherlands on Tuesday.

The crane a four axle model from the Schot crane fleet, was set up in the towns Evenemententerrein (fairground/events field) with a massive Dutch flag – said to be 37.5 metres long by 25 metres high – suspended from its jib, when something, such as a strong gust of wind caused the failure.

The crane flies one of the largest flags in the Netherlands

The company has been doing this every year on Koningsdag (King's Day), with flags of various sizes, since 2016, but perhaps this time the flag was simply too big? One report suggests that the bottom of the flag got caught in the tower structure, helping turn it into a giant sail.

Roel van der Heide of Schot said: "We were shocked but are happy that no people were injured in the area, that would have been a disaster. We are really sick of what has happened here."
