RT overturn

A Rough Terrain crane overturned sideways onto a five storey development in Winchester, Massachusetts - on the north side of greater Boston - on Tuesday, slicing though the building.
Thankfully no one was injured in the incident.

The cause is clear, the operator had installed and offset the swingaway extension and then telescoped the crane’s five section boom to almost full extension amazingly with the crane still free on wheels, having made no attempt to set the outriggers.

Not surprisingly the crane, on of the larger Grove RTs, went over, with the boom landing on the building and the dynamic effect of the collision buckling the upper sections of the boom.

OSHA - the Occupational Safety and Health Administration - is investigating however it ought to be a relatively quick one. The video below was filmed shortly after the incident occurred. The developer of what will be a 96 unit apartment complex is Strategic Land Ventures.

I still don't understand how the operator was competent enough to erect and offset the jib, but had no clue as to outriggers.

Maybe somebody else put the jib on for him .......?

o
Good Morning Mr Wood,

The overturned Rough Terrain Crane depicted above is Crane Incident number 1171 worldwide all of which has Killed 634 persons since Monday 7 May 2007.

Moreover this is also Crane Incident number 962 since you and I had that Conversation about Crane Safety in Edinburgh on Thursday 13 October 2011.

Please be advised that Worker Safety is Important, Very Important and Much too Important to leave it to chance by not extending the Outriggers ?

Yours sincerely

Looks like the operator attended jib installation class, but played hooky on the day of outrigger class.

Fairly obvious what went wrong, wait a few minutes press a button and the mess could all have been avoided.
