Oshkosh invests in LiDar

JLG parent company Oshkosh has invested in Australian start up business Baraja which develops advanced - or - 'differentiated' LiDAR solutions. (Light Detection And Ranging or Laser Imaging, Detection, and Ranging which determines distances by targeting an object with a laser and measuring the time for the reflected light takes to return to the receiver.) Oshkosh says that "its investment in Baraja supports its aim to provide innovative solutions that will enhance and differentiate its products in terms of safety and autonomous operation."

Baraja is developing high performance LiDAR technology that should be more capable and reliable than existing LiDAR systems, particular when used in harsh environments – such as defence. One of Baraja’s unique propositions is the use of prism like optics instead of mechanical steering to scan the environment in a solid state fashion, resulting in a higher quality ‘pointcloud’ for use in self-driving vehicles or equipment.

Baraja chief executive Federico Collarte said: “Our Spectrum-Scan LiDAR technologies are built to provide long term reliability, resolution and range to facilitate Level 4 autonomous driving. These pioneering sensors completely rethink environment scanning to better detect objects at range.”

Oshkosh chief executive John Pfeifer added: “We are making key strategic investments to be first to market with new features and functions that make Oshkosh products safer and more productive. By partnering with Baraja, we are active participants in the development process to enable best in class perception sensor solutions.”
