700t triplets for Guay

Canadian crane rental company Guay has ordered three 700 tonne Liebherr LR 1700-1.0 crawler cranes, one of which will be mounted on the new narrow track chassis.

The company has acquired the cranes in order to meet growing demand from wind turbines installation contractors, as well as the need for larger cranes to lift heavier components to greater hub heights.

The LR 1700-1.0 features 165 metres of main boom, while a maximum under hook height of 198 metres can be achieved with 96 metres of main boom and 102 metres of luffing jib. It is able to handle its full capacity at a radius of 8.5 metres and has a maximum radius of 160 metres. The crane also feature VarioTray and V-frame ballast systems, with hydraulic ballast radius adjustment from 13 to 21 metres.
The deal is concluded at Conexpo

Executive vice president Guillaume Gagnon said: "We are seeing a strong increase in demand for new wind farms in our market. The government is investing large sums in green energy to meet the growing demand. We need to invest in larger crawler cranes as wind turbines get heavier and taller."

"We will now be able to erect wind turbines up to 165 metres in height and the maximum hook height of 196 metres will enable us to work on tall buildings. We chose the LR 1700-1.0 to be able to provide our customers with a state of the art crane for their future wind projects. After completing our research, the high lifting capacity and small footprint proved to be the perfect combination for us. Compared to larger crawler cranes, the transport costs for the LR 1700-1.0 are lower due to the perfect weight and size of its components."

"The V-Frame increases the crane’s capacity and flexibility to do all the work we have planned. VarioTray saves us time when working on wind power projects because we only need a lot of counterweight to erect long boom configurations. We have been working with Liebherr for a long time and like the fact that Liebherr continually creates innovations that drive the industry forward.”

Based in Quebec City, Guay was founded in 1964 by JeanMarc Baronet who still owns the company and serves as president at the age of 92. Today, the company employs around 625 people and operates over 500 cranes of all types from spider cranes and tower cranes to crawlers up to 700 tonnes and All Terrains up to 1,200 tonnes, available from 23 locations. It also offers a range of lifting, rigging, and transport and heavy haulage services.
