Tower crane over in Mainburg

A tower crane collapsed in Mainburg, Germany - north of Munich in Bavaria - last Sunday when the tower’s counterweighted foundation became unstable.

The crane was being used for work on the roof of the headquarters and main production facility of air conditioning and heating appliance manufacturer Wolf.

The police initially suggested that the ground had shifted under the base of the crane but have not confirmed that. The crane went over backwards and crashed down on a lower part of the building which appears to be some form of loading bay. Thankfully no one was injured in the incident. As it came down the crane’s jib struck a number of roof mounted solar panels, short circuiting them and almost causing a fire.
