Swiss tower crane overturn

A tower crane overturned yesterday on a construction site in Uerikon/Stäfa to the south east of Zurich in Switzerland.
Five people were hurt in the incident, but only suffered minor injuries. They were treated on site but as a precaution were taken to hospital for a check-up.

The crane - a Liebherr top slewer carrying the Toneatti sign - was set up on a counterbalanced cruciform base on the side of a steep valley, within an urban district when somehow it overturned at the base.

The cause of the accident is still unclear and is being investigated by the Zurich cantonal police and the public prosecutor's office. A police helicopter from Zurich was also used to check out the scene and take photographs.

The investigation team has also taken soil samples for analysis by a structural engineer and a geologist.
The Zurich cantonal police, the Stäfa and Meilen fire brigades, the See/Oberland public prosecutor's office, the GVZ and the AWEL, Suva and private companies for structural engineering and geology have all been brought in to investigate.
