Three crane order for MacGregor

Cargotec’s division MacGregor has received an order for three cranes from Italian company Prysmian.

The order includes a 100 tonne active heave compensated crane (AHC), a 20 tonne Offshore crane and a three tonne deck crane to be installed on a cable layer from shipbuilder Vard.

MacGregor has also been contracted to supply its OnWatch feature which includes 24/7 technical support with the cranes scheduled to arrive in the third quarter of 2025.

Pasi Lehtonen of MacGregor said: "This is a significant order for MacGregor's offshore handling business, and we are pleased to supply Vard with yet another package of our cranes. The market continues to respond well to our unique and modern designs, which combine resilience in service and lightweight round shaped jibs."

In the 1920s, engineers Robert and Joseph MacGregor developed the first steel hatch cover, patented in 1929, which revolutionised ship and cargo safety. In 1937, they formed MacGregor & Company in Whitley Bay, England, to promote and sell their invention.

The business expanded in 1983 by merging with Finland's Navire, leading to create MacGregor-Navire. Subsequent acquisitions and mergers with companies like Conver-OSR, Hägglunds Marine, and Hydramarine provided further diversification and growth. In 2005, Cargotec acquired MacGregor, with the acquisitions continuing into new markets, particularly in Asia. However, in 2022, Cargotec announced plans to displose of the MacGregor business later this year.
