Crane over in Helsinki

A crane overturned last week while working on the demolition of the Hakaniemi bridge in central Helsinki, Finland.

The incident occurred on Monday August 12th when according to the Helsinki Rescue Service the ground gave way under the crane’s rear outriggers, although we have not been able to confirm that this was definitely the cause. The crane, a five axle 130 tonne Grove GMK 5130-2 from the Sjoman rental fleet had most of its 60 metre, six section boom extended when it went over.

The crane operator managed to escape from his cab without suffering any injuries and no one else was affected. Three large Sjoman cranes and a larger wrecker truck were brought in to stabilise the stricken crane which was disrupting traffic in the city, the recovery was completed the following day.

The new bridge is part of a major development of the area and will replace the 1961 bridge which has significantly deteriorated in recent years.
