The boom of a ship to shore container crane collapsed onto a ship in Yantian Port – near the border with Hong Kong in Southern China earlier this week. The incident occurred on Monday morning and caused operations at the berth, while two other cranes of the same type were withdrawn from service while the investigation is carried out. Thankfully no one was injured in the incident.
We understand, but it has not been confirmed, that the hoists that raise or lower the boom failed causing a sudden drop.
The port has 16 deep water container berths and is equipped with over 70 quay cranes, the majority of which are Super Post-Panamax.
