Dutch heavy lift specialist Mammoet has relocated a beach pavilion on Texel island in North Holland, the Netherlands, using Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs).
An SPMT on its way to move the building
The relocation was required after local authorities recommended allowing sand dunes near the pavilion to grow naturally to combat erosion and rising sea levels. The project was completed for contractor JLD Contracting.
The SPMT ready to be positioned under the building
Prior to the move, JLD installed new piling at the destination site and constructed a beam layer perpendicular to the building's original foundation. A steel platform was installed beneath the wooden structure to prevent deformation during transport.

After disconnecting utilities, the pavilion was lifted using two SPMT trains. The transporters then carried the building to its new location where it was lowered onto the newly installed beams. The entire transport operation took approximately ten minutes and was live-streamed online.

The pavilion, known as Paal 17 Aan Zee, is now operational in its new location. Click here to see the operation in action.
