Two custom build crawlers in Spain

Heavy lift and transport specialist Transbiaga is using its custom build Kobelco cranes near Cadiz in Andalucia, Southern Spain.

The first of two, new 250 tonne capacity Kobelco CKE2500-2 crawler cranes is being used to erect 82, 2MW wind turbine generators for Spanish electricity company Iberdrola.

The first of Transbiaga’s two new Kobelco CKE2500-2 crawler cranes with special ‘custom build’ options.

Each 2MW generator weighs 68 tonnes with the first tower section weighing 62 tonne. The nose cone with the 3 propeller blades weighs around 42 tonnes - each propeller blade has a weight of 7 tonnes and a length of about 27 metres.

The second crane was delivered a few weeks ago with a third CKE2500-2 scheduled for delivery next year.

The two cranes are the first equipped with some of Kobelco's new ‘custom build’ options such as extendable/retractable tracks which gives them a minimum overall width of 4.85 metres.

The units also have special 9.3 metre long tracks in the new designed crawler frame with four travel motors (instead of the standard two) additional track rollers and special hardened shoes.

This specification also results in a larger foot-print than the standard CKE2500-2 with better stability for high-level lifting.

The special boom configuration includes a 61metre main boom combined with a newly-developed 27.4 metre heavy fixed jib, giving a lift capacity of 42 tonnes at 14-15 metres radius and a maximum hook height of 86.4m.
