US training and certification organisation, the NCCCO (National Commission for the Certification of Crane Operators) Foundation has launched a ‘recruitment playbook’ intended to help employers move beyond informal and word of mouth hiring methods, towards more structured recruitment strategies.
The playbook sets out a framework for widening recruitment efforts while reflecting on the skills and responsibilities required in the sector. It focuses on attributes such as problem solving, concentration, accountability and attention to detail, rather than job titles or qualifications alone. It also includes recruitment guidance for three target groups - women in trades, truck drivers with commercial driving licences, and construction workers changing roles - along with tools aimed at each audience.
T.J. Cantwell
NCCCO executive director T.J. Cantwell said: “The playbook is a first for the crane industry by providing not only well founded and tested strategies for recruiting quality employees, but also sharing free messaging, images, and videos to implement the strategy. It’s intended for anyone recruiting for the crane industry, including contractors, crane companies, training providers, unions, and other workforce partners.”
