HSE head for 2012 Olympics appointed

The UK Health and Safety Executive has appointed Stephen Williams to the newly created post of director of field operations (London) and the Olympics.

Williams will lead the health and safety regulation of the 2012 Olympics which includes the construction phase, while heading up HSE London Field Operations Division. He will continue in his current role as chief inspector of construction until the post is filled.

Williams joined the HSE in 1977 as a factory inspector, he has worked on the Channel Tunnel and Dartford Bridge construction projects and headed HSE’s construction policy team.

He was appointed HM deputy chief inspector of railways in 2000, and held senior posts in railways technical division and policy. He became HSE’s chief Inspector of Construction in 2005, and director of field operations division – London in November 2006.
