Tower crane collapse kills 5 children

Five children were killed and two injured today in Zibo City, Shandong Province, China, after a tower crane collapsed on a kindergarten. The crane operator was also injured.

The cranes superstructure seperated from the tower at the slew ring

The crane working on an adjacent construction site collapsed onto the roof of the kindergarten, where about 100 children were being looked after after the cranes superstructure became detached from the tower at the slew ring. The children who died had been outside and were hit by falling bricks. The crane's operator was also injured.

The cranes jib crashed into the playground

A preliminary police investigation, quickly put the accident down to poor safety measures and managers from the construction company responsible for the site, have been detained.

Zibo police and work safety officials are still investigating the accident.
