Manitowoc expands Italian plant

Manitowoc formally opened the latest expansion to its crane production facility in Niella Tanaro, Italy, last week and confirmed the move of all two and three axle All Terrain crane production to the Italian plant.

Construction began on the new 5,000 square metre expansion in 2007, the facility now manufactures two Grove Rough Terrain crane models while the older 2,500 square metre building, completed in 2005 will now assemble all of Grove’s two and three axle All Terrain cranes.
Other parts of the Niella plant build Potain self-erecting and top slewing tower cranes.

The Niella Tanaro plant, which is near Turin began as a Potain plant for self erecting tower cranes in 2000. The 2005 and 2007 expansions have taken the covered production space up to 24,000 square metres on an 81,000 square metre plot.

Products on display at the opening

Speaking at the opening event, Manitowoc Crane president Eric Etchart said: “The expansion here is important because it gives us greater capacity to build more cranes, but equally important is the capacity that is freed up at our other facilities. We are now building all our two axle and three axle All Terrain cranes here, allowing us more capacity at our factory in Wilhelmshaven, Germany. And building Rough Terrain cranes here for the Italian market gives us greater flexibility at our factory in Shady Grove.”
