Crosby meets BS EN in UK

According to lifting equipment producer, Crosby Europe, the company has become the first, and only, manufacturer to offer lifting equipment in the UK which complies with the latest BS EN 13889:2003 standard for forged steel shackles, including Dee and Bow shackles ranging from 0,5 to 25 t capacity.

The new BS EN standard covers a number of key criteria, including the Charpy Impact Test – an indicator of the performance of the shackles under harsh operating conditions, traceability on both the body and pin of the shackle, certification and fatigue testing, which determines the ability of the material to withstand repeated applications of load, which in the case is 20,000 cycles at one and a half times the working load limit.

Crosby uses the Product Identification Code (PIC) to maintain control throughout the manufacturing process, and which is marked on both shackles and pins. ‘Quic-Check’ marks on the equipment also allows the rigger to select the correct shackle for the application in hand out in the field.

Crosby says that a number standards will be entering the market this year that will apply to lifting and rigging equipment used across the EU. “We have worked hard to be the first manufacturer to achieve this standard and we will be issuing a series of data sheets over the coming months explaining the standards and our compliance across the product range,” said Willy Caubergs, managing director of Crosby Europe. “In safety critical lifting applications, we believe that the introduction of these standards will allow specifiers and buyers to have complete confidence in our products.”
