Fatal tower crane accident

Three people were killed and five others seriously injured after a tower crane collapsed causing it to fall from the 52nd floor of a building under construction in south China's Guangdong Province yesterday.

The accident occurred at the Taishang Building in Dongguan City which will eventually be 68 storeys -289 metres high, the three men who died at the scene, included the crane operator and two construction workers on the ground.

A statement by a local official said: “The initial investigation suggests a quality problem with the tower crane caused the accident.” A subsequent report blames it on a jib or back mast failure.
