500 tonne Terex for Solley

US crane rental company Solley Crane Service of Decatur, Alabama has taken delivery of a 500 tonne Terex AC 500-2 All Terrain crane.

The eight-axle AC 500-2 has a 56 metre main boom and when combined with its 90 metre luffing jib provides a maximum under-hook height of 142 metres. It is also equipped with Terex’s Sideways Superlift system as well as star-type outriggers.

The new crane went straight to work unloading press parts for an automotive parts manufacturer at a local railroad yard. Ray Solley, president of Solley Crane, said: “The largest press part weighed 127 tonnes and for a job that size we would normally have used two of our 200 tonne cranes in a tandem lift. Any time you can make a lift with a single crane it is safer as it involves less complexity. The AC 500-2 allows us to fill the void of a 350 tonne crane and still have the additional capacity to do larger jobs. Its flexibility of configuration was a key selling feature for us.”

The AC 500-2 lifting a press part weighing 127 tonnes

Solley Crane Service was founded in 1972, initially focusing on construction and maintenance projects for heavy industrial businesses. The purchase of a used crane then led to expansion into the concrete business. During the mid-1980s recession the company transitioned away from the concrete business to focus on its crane and rigging business. It now has over 50 cranes, most of which are Terex, topped by its latest 500 tonne purchase.
