BP Chembel adds second RT

International oil and gas company BP has taken delivery of a 135 tonne Grove RT9150E Rough Terrain crane for its Belgian chemical production centre BP Chembel.

The RT9150E has a 60 metre, six section main boom and offers a tip height of 81 metres when combined with its bi-fold swingaway extension. Fully extended the crane can lift 3.6 tonne at a 39 metre radius. Supplied by Grove’s dealer Belgium Lifting & Equipment, the crane replaces an old 80 tonne All Terrain crane and joins an 80 tonne Grove RT890E Rough Terrain crane which was purchased back in 2007. Based at its plant in Geel, the company has said the crane will perform scheduled and emergency maintenance work.

BP buys second Grove crane for refinery maintenance

Paul Spaepen, chief executive of Belgian Lifting & Equipment, said: “Most plants of this kind sub-contract maintenance work, which often involves renting large All Terrain cranes, which can prove costly. This crane is far more compact and easier to manoeuvre than an equivalent capacity All Terrain, and it is ideal for the congested industrial environment in which it will operate. The crane has excellent capacity and reach, making it a class-leading machine suitable for a wide range of work in the oil and gas industry.”

BP Chembel is BP’s Belgium chemical production centre which produces more than two million tons of purified terephthatic acid and paraxylene each year. It is currently one of the largest refineries in Belgium and employs more than 360 people.
