Palazzani for nuclear plant

Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant in Sosnovy Bor, Russia has taken delivery of a specially modified 39 metre Palazzani TSJ 39 spider lift.

The new machine was delivered by Vertex, the Palazzani dealer for Russia, the unit has a six section telescopic boom topped by a 175 degree articulating jib. On the regular machine the combination offers an outreach of 16.5 metres and a maximum platform capacity of 230kg. However in order to meet the demandig specification this unit had to be highly modified.

The tender for the an access solution to maintain the firefighting systems inside the reactor hall dome, which are located at heights to almost 39 metres, was issued almost five years ago by the state corporation Rosatom. The platform had to enter the reactor hall through a small transport and decontamination gateway/airlock, which made for a very challenging product search.

The solution proposed by Palazzani and Vertex, was to take the TSJ 39 superstructure and mount it on a special low slung trolley. The unit was also narrow enough, and thanks to its six section boom, short enough to fit the gateway, although only with the boom raised at an angle. Special removable outriggers with a three by four metre footprint were also substituted, and will be bolted to the floor while working inside the dome, in order to ensure perfect stability.

The machine was then painted with a special coating that will both allow it to withstand repeated decontamination cleaning, but also last the required working life of 60 years. Finally the machine was fully tested to TR CU certification standards and then verified by JSC St. Petersburg Research and Design Institute.
