Crane topples onto Youth club

A 50 tonne All Terrain crane toppled over onto a new block being built at a combined youth club, police and apartment building in southwest Sydney on Thursday.

The crane was lifting a 1.3 tonne load when the ground under its outriggers gave way. No details of what kind of outrigger pads or shoring is available at this time.

The crane toppled when the ground gave way

No one was injured in the accident, which damaged the partially-built apartments and the roof of the neighbouring club.

A spokeswoman for the Australian health and safety organisation - WorkCover said that a geotechnical expert had been called in to investigate the accident and a salvage operation was under way.

Work on the apartments has stopped until WorkCover declares the site safe.
