Five RTGs Norfolk Southern

US rail transport company Norfolk Southern has ordered five hybrid Konecranes rubber tyred gantry (RTG) cranes for its Landers Yard rail terminal in Chicago and Inman Yard terminal in Atlanta.

The two cranes at Landers can stack one over three containers high over two rail lines and a truck lane. The three at Inman can also stack one over three containers but over a single rail line and two truck lanes. They have all been equipped with the company’s auto-steer feature which ensures they remain on a pre-programmed path.

The hybrid RTGs are battery powered but feature a diesel generator to top up/recharge the batteries. The generator can also be used alongside the battery during peak operations, while regenerative braking provides an additional top up charge to the battery pack.

Norfolk Southern will take delivery of its hybrid RTGs by the end of the year

Established in 1827, Norfolk Southern dates back to the earliest days of American railroad and now operates 19,500 miles of railway across 22 states, transporting coal, chemicals, agriculture, metals, cars, parts and construction materials. The company claims to offer the largest intermodal network in eastern North America and serves all the major ports on the east coast.
