A new Falcon for the mosque

The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque in Oman is replacing its 22 year old spider lift with a new 29m Falcon.

The mosque decided to retire its Falcon TST 29 which has been helping maintain the impressive building since 2001. Back then the manufacturer was known as Falck Schmidt. Although it has had some ownership changes over the years the company essentially remains the same, although the product line has changed a great deal.

The new Falcon 290 was supplied through local distributor Muscat Overseas Engineering Services and features a five section boom topped by double articulated jib to offer up to 15 metres of outreach with 100kg in the platform. Maximum platform capacity is 200kg at up to 13 metres, while the machine can also reach 4.5 metres below ground level. Weighing 3,750kg, it has an overall width of just 800mm, a height of 1.98 metres and a stowed length of 6.3 metres.

The mosque decided to stay with what it knows taking another wheeled machine, rather than tracked. The rationale behind that decision is how well the old machine has been working on the highly decorative flooring and carpets. While it looks quite similar the new machine is packed with new technology. It also wanted to maintain the after sales support relationship that it has relied on for the past 22 years.
Oman has been a good market for Falcon and anyone passing through the airport will have seen at least one of the five units working there.
