A 3.5 tonne truck mounted lift overturned in a busy street in Dublin yesterday, thankfully no one was injured, but the machine set up may well have qualified for our Death Wish series.
The incident occurred on Liffey street in central Dublin, when a telescopic truck mount was working on a building façade. The machine is owned by the infrastructure and lighting company the Elmore Group. Among its range of services are installing and maintaining street lights, traffic lights and Christmas lights. It looks as though the cause was related to overloading or overextending the boom, which amounts to much the same thing.
The Dublin Fire Brigade attended the scene along with paramedics, but there were no reports of anyone being hurt. Which is remarkable, given how busy the street was and that there was little apparent attempt at cordoning off the area from pedestrians, even after the machine had tipped.
On top of that the lift was set up without any outrigger mats on a street with clear underground voids. The operator has even set one of the outriggers direct on the drain grid itself!
Definitely one for our Death Wish series – this could have been so much worse.
Have a safe weekend.
